1947

These historic images were submitted to the site by Carolyn Ellis and show some of the effects that the heavy snowfall of 1947 had in Abertillery. Mnore 1947 images are avaiable using the link oppostite.

The winter of 1946-47 had been relatively mild until mid-January 1947, but on January 21, 1947 a cold spell started which lasted through to mid-March with several bouts of very heavy snow and blizzards. The second world war had ended less than two years previously and the country was already in the grip of austere hardship with rationing and the winter conditions brought real fears of a famine when it proved difficult to produce vegetables.

Milder air in mid-March brought relief to the biting cold but caused havoc with major floods in some areas of the UK. The winter as a whole was less cold than the next really severe winter of 1963, considered to be the worst of the 20th century, but there was a greater quantity of snowfall. The winter of 1947 is also thought to have taken its toll on the ruling Labour Government of the time, which was defeated by the Conservatives in 1950. For more details on 1947, click here.
