The Abertillery Ladies Orpheus Choir was formed in 1911 and has been an institution in Abertillery and the surrounding area since that time.

Presently, there are about 30 choristers representing wide range of ages drawn from a diverse cross-section of the community. The choir has a similarly diverse repertoire from classical to songs from the shows and popular music.

We sing at various events and functions, many of which are to raise funds for charity. Currently, the choir is being conducted by Steve Bard with Lyndon Stevens as accompanist.

The choir meets for rehearsal at 6.45pm on Mondays at The Ebenezer Church, Abertillery.

If you wish you can contact Lisa Spratt, the secretary, for more details at lisaje_3@hotmail.com

YOU CAN SING  - WITH US!

New choristers are always most welcome and it can help you.

Singing is good for you and can have beneficial health effects. Indeed the national charity Heart Research UK is presently extolling the virtues of those benefits with its "Sing For Your Heart" campaign

Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, who has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years says, “The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological. Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.”
